What REALMS is about

What is REALMS

REALMS is a Hands On Learning Charter School in Central Oregon. We are very different from most schools because we normally do not believe in learning by textbooks and homework (though we do have some). Our purpose is to foster scholarship, strengthen community, and inspire stewardship through active learning.

Here we have a mission, a mission to challenge each other to investigate, understand, and become stewards of the human and natural world around us.

Our Mission

Our Mission

Our mission is to help the process of restoration for Tumalo Creek. Meaning what we did to help restore Tumalo after the Bridge Creek fire. Since the fire was so devastating loggers came and took all of the trees away including the trees that were in the banks. After that there was nothing left. People finally realized that what we are doing to the creek is wrong so they started to fix it. They thought that it would be nice for the schools to get involved and that’s where we come in.

The 8th grade classes started to get really involved. We replanted trees and most of the riparian vegetation along the side of the creek along with a couple other schools.

Week 6 at Drake Park

An excited group of eighth graders ran off the bus, thankful to be in a place that is familiar to them, Drake Park.  Excited to step out of our comfort zones and ask people questions. We wanted to know what our community knows about water rights. We were those eighth graders.  Corralled into a circle by none other than Karen and Eli, for a quick overview of the schedule and an interesting... demonstration of how to survey our fellow citizens.
So we were off! Half walked further down the trail, the other half staying near the downtown area. And when the time arose for us to stop a person and ask for a minute of their time a majority of us panicked. So of course we try again. My first survey was a rather long one. I was amazed at how many things I'd never thought of in regards to our water. After that survey, we'd changed. Built up some confidence. Pretty soon we were walking and talking to just about everyone.
After a quick lunch and time for chit chat we repeated the surveying process at River bend Park. (Now nearly frozen from the morning air). And after we gathered an acceptable amount of surveys we circled up and reflected on our day. Overall it was a very productive day and an adrenaline rush every time we talked to someone.
